Heating Requirements in This Industry
In air conditioning systems, electric heaters are used for in-duct heating, as preheating coils in air handling units and for frost protection. In these applications the heater depends entirely on air flow and must be designed together with the system's control logic. In every scenario where the fan stops, the heater must also be switched off.
Typical Heating Applications
- Reheating and zone heating in ventilation ducts
- Preheating coils in air handling units
- Frost protection for coils and lines
- Space heating in warehouses and plant rooms
Which Heater, and Why?
- Air Duct Heater — Flange-mounted in the duct and switched in as needed with staged power control.
- Finned Tubular Heaters — The finned body increases heat transfer in the air stream, providing compact heating inside the air handling unit.
- Electric Fan Heater — Fan and heater in one unit; a space heating unit that needs no ductwork.
- Self-Regulating Heating Cable — Prevents freezing on pipe and drain lines by adjusting its own output to the temperature.
- Boiler and Tank Heaters — Provides auxiliary heating in the tanks and boilers that feed the hot water coil.
- Thermostats and Temperature Controllers — Over-temperature thermostats and staged controllers complete the safety chain of the duct heater.

Key Considerations
Duct heater selection starts with the air flow rate, the inlet and outlet temperatures and the duct cross-section. Air flow is the only thing that carries heat away from the heater surface; a fan interlock, a flow switch and an over-temperature thermostat are therefore part of the design. In humid environments and at outdoor air intakes, the sheath and terminal box must be protected. Power is controlled by staged contactors or an SSR to balance comfort and energy consumption.
- A fan interlock and a flow switch are mandatory safety measures for duct-type heaters.
- The minimum air velocity should not fall below 1.5 m/s.
- Staged power control offers advantages in both comfort and energy consumption.
- For frost protection, self-regulating cable is safer and more flexible than constant wattage cable.
Custom Manufacturing and Quotation
For HVAC projects, the duct size, air flow rate, required temperature rise, supply voltage and control method are sufficient for a quotation. Our engineer carries out the power calculation; the number of stages and the safety devices are agreed together according to your needs. Production follows the approved dimension list; for air handling unit manufacturers, the product code is fixed to make repeat orders easier.
