General Information
Liquid and process heaters work either immersed in the medium to be heated or mounted on the tank wall. They are used in water, oil, chemical baths, boilers and steam lines. The main factor in selecting a product in this family is the chemical character of the medium: in a corrosive environment, a wrongly chosen sheath material will be perforated within a short time, even if the heater remains electrically sound.
Selection Criteria
First the medium is defined (water, oil, acid, alkali, food). The sheath material follows from this: AISI 304 for general purpose, AISI 316 for chloride environments, Alloy 800 for high temperatures, titanium and quartz for acidic baths. The watt density is then limited according to the medium — values above 3 W/cm² in oil or 10 W/cm² in water carry a risk of surface overheating and scaling. In explosive atmospheres an Exproof/ATEX certified product is mandatory.
