General Information
Mould and barrel heaters are the product family that transfers heat directly into the metal mass they are in contact with. On plastic injection moulding and extrusion lines they keep barrels, nozzles, hot runners and mould blocks at their target temperature. The deciding criteria in this family are the geometry of the contact surface, the watt density and the temperature limit of the insulation material.
Selection Criteria
Selection starts with the mounting geometry: is the part to be heated a cylindrical barrel, a bore that takes a rod-type heater, or a flat plate surface? The insulation is then chosen according to the target temperature — mica operates safely up to 450 °C, ceramic up to 650 °C. Finally the watt density is set; a high watt density gives fast heat-up but shortens service life if contact quality is poor.
