General Information

A ceramic infrared heater is produced by embedding resistance wire in a ceramic body. Its surface heats up and emits medium to long wave (2–10 µm) infrared radiation. This band is the range that organic materials such as plastics, paper, textiles and food absorb most efficiently; with the same electrical power, much more useful heat is obtained than with short wave.

The thermal inertia of the ceramic mass is higher than that of quartz; it takes a few minutes to reach full power. While this is a disadvantage in applications requiring fast start-up, it becomes an advantage on continuously running lines: temperature fluctuations are smoothed and a uniform heat profile forms on the surface.

Two basic forms are produced: flat and concave. The concave surface focuses the radiation at a certain distance and is used to heat materials in strip form; the flat form gives diffuse radiation spread over a large area. A thermocouple can be integrated in the body to measure the surface temperature directly.
