General Information
A self-regulating cable consists of a conductive polymer matrix placed between two parallel conductors. As this matrix heats up it expands, the conductive carbon paths within it break and resistance increases — as a result, the cable produces less power in warm areas and more power in cold areas. This behaviour takes place automatically and independently at every point.
This property provides two major practical advantages. First, the cable does not burn out even when overlapped; at crossing points the temperature rises and the power drops by itself. Second, the cable can be cut to the required length in the field. Unlike constant wattage cable, changing the length does not upset the resistance, because the conductors are connected in parallel.
These two properties radically simplify installation: no exact length calculation is needed before the project, and complex geometries such as valves and flanges can be wrapped freely. It is the standard solution for frost protection, process temperature maintenance and roof/gutter de-icing. Termination and power connection kits for the ends are supplied separately.
Applications
- Pipeline frost protection

Frequently Asked Questions
Self-regulating cable automatically reduces its power as temperature rises. This allows it to be overlapped and cut to the required length in the field. Neither is possible with constant wattage cable.
Although the cable limits its own output, an ambient or pipe thermostat is recommended to save energy and avoid unnecessary operation. For frost protection the thermostat is set to switch on slightly above freezing point.
