General Information
Temperature control is carried out by two basic methods. On/off control cuts the heater when the set value is reached and switches it back on when the temperature has dropped by a certain differential. It is simple and economical, but the temperature always oscillates around the set point. Capillary thermostats work on this principle and switch mechanically without needing an electrical supply.
PID control, on the other hand, measures the rate at which the temperature approaches the set point and reduces power progressively to prevent overshoot. It is the standard in processes that require precise temperature holding. Used together with a solid state relay (SSR), it can switch on the order of seconds; unlike a mechanical contactor it has no wearing parts and provides control within ±1 °C.
In multi-zone applications — extrusion lines, hot runner systems, multi-zone furnaces — controllers, SSRs, fuses and fans are brought together in a single panel. With the number of zones, power and sensor type, panel engineering and manufacturing can be carried out.

Frequently Asked Questions
If a temperature swing of a few degrees is acceptable, a thermostat is sufficient and economical. If product quality is temperature-sensitive (plastics processing, food, heat treatment), a PID controller with an SSR is required; it holds the temperature in a much narrower band than a thermostat.
A contactor is a mechanical switch and its contacts wear with frequent switching. Because PID control can switch several times per second, a contactor fails quickly. An SSR has no moving parts, is silent and lasts much longer.
