General Information
The products in this family transfer heat by radiation rather than contact. The infrared wavelength is chosen according to the absorption characteristics of the material to be heated; the right wavelength can make a twofold difference in efficiency at the same power. In furnace applications above 1000 °C, ceramic heating elements such as silicon carbide and MoSi₂ are used instead of metallic wires.
Selection Criteria
Short wave (quartz) offers fast response and high intensity; it suits paint drying and thermoforming. Medium and long wave (ceramic) gives softer, more uniform heating; it is preferred in plastic forming and food applications. For furnaces, the maximum temperature, the atmosphere (oxidising, reducing, vacuum) and element life are evaluated together.
