General Information

A quartz tube heater consists of coiled resistance wire placed inside a transparent quartz tube. Because quartz transmits infrared radiation almost without loss, most of the energy produced reaches the surface to be heated directly. Since there is no metal mass in between that needs to be heated, the response time is 1–3 seconds.

Short wave radiation (1.2–2.0 µm) provides high intensity and penetrates slightly below the surface of the material. This is a clear advantage in paint drying, thermoforming and print drying: the material heats more evenly throughout its mass rather than from the outside in.

The second element determining efficiency is the reflector. A gold or aluminium reflector placed behind the tube directs radiation that would otherwise be lost towards the target; gold coating gives higher reflectance than aluminium in the short wave range and remains stable at high temperatures. The reflector type is selected according to the efficiency expected from the application.
