General Information

Explosion-proof heaters are used in facilities where explosive gas, vapour or dust may be present in the atmosphere. Petrochemical plants, paint and solvent facilities, fuel depots, and pharmaceutical and chemical production are typical applications. A standard heater cannot be used in these environments for two reasons: sparks that may occur at the terminal connection, and a surface temperature exceeding the ignition temperature of the substance present.

Explosion-proof design addresses both risks. The electrical connections are enclosed in a flameproof (Ex d) cast enclosure designed to contain an internal explosion and prevent flame from escaping outside. The surface temperature of the heating element is limited so that it stays below the ignition temperature of the substance present — this is expressed by the temperature class (T1–T6).

To determine the right product, the zone classification of the facility (Zone 0/1/2 or 20/21/22), the gas group present (IIA, IIB, IIC) and the required temperature class must be known. This information is found in the facility's explosion protection document. Sharing these three items at the quotation stage clarifies the appropriate design and the scope of certification.
